Yura Language Consultative Group - Adnyamai Profile Website Map
Landcare, Community Groups, Gladstone,

The Yura Language Consultative Group Inc. was formed in the early 1990s to do community-based language research and other types of heritage work. We have had many members over the years, some of whom have passed on. Their input will always be valued and never forgotten. One of the biggest projects we are working on is known as the ‘Adnyamathanha’ project which is funded by the National Heritage Trust and administered through the Yura Language Consultative Group Inc. This project looks at mai (edible or medicinal bush plants) that Adnyamathanha Yuras knows about and where it is or was located in Adnyamathanha yarta (land). The main aim of the project is to establish discussion among Adnyamathanha about caring for plants and animals of cultural and environmental significance in the northern Flinders Ranges. It will also explore culturally appropriate ways that are widely recognised and respectful of Adnyamathanha values and beliefs. The Adnyamathanha project aims to: preserve and protect native flora and fauna as a priority, facilitate a series of workshops and field trips, document information collected, collect seeds and propagate plants, and coordinate a strategy for the replanting program. Important Issues about the Adnyamathanha project are: Natural springs – Where are they and in what condition; Land clearing – recent and historic; Tree planting – revegetation of areas identified as significant; Pollution – caused through development e.g. Mining; and Tourism – impact of humans, vehicles, etc. This study may identify some ways of improving practices and/or policies in natural resource management. Work will be done through YLCG in a respective and non-threatening way according to research guidelines, and the project is expected to be completed in 3 years. You can take part in our project by coming on one of our field trips, doing an interview, being part of a small group discussion, or by giving guidance to others working on the project. Membership is open to any Adnyamathanha person and the Yura Language Consultative Group Inc. encourages young people to join our group but they must ensure that the Elders and their views are respected according to Adnyamathanha tradition. If you wish to join, please call the project officer, Mrs. Enice Marsh on 08 8662 2438

Special Offer: Clean up World Day (13 November, 05). Our usual terrific supporters were there Allan, Louise, Heather, Geoff, Austin and also Kath Loxton from Koolunga, plus some of our nearby locals came along to help out. In all it was a great turnout. Once again there was an interesting mix of rubbish to be picked up. Sun-chairs, a coffee table and quite a few abandoned supermarket trolleys that we filled with some very odd things. Some mattresses that had been in the creek off Hazelwood for some time we’ve finally had Melbourne Water pick up. We were unable to move them ourselves. We filled a dumpster and managed to recycle quite a few plastic and glass bottles. After we finished we had a barbeque provided by Knox Conservation Department and ably prepared by James. PLANTING, WEEDING and HERBICIDING Achievements of the 2004/2005 financial year. Over the past financial year, over 17 events / activity days, the following was achieved:- • 86 volunteers participated • 1, 740 tube stock were planted • 10 bags of rubbish were collected • 35 bags of weeds were hand-weeded and cut-&-painted, with an additional 14 hours of further cutting and painting of woody weeds. • 6 hours of mulching of a bed previously planted. THANK YOU Thanks everyone including our great Bush Crew: James Rose and Lisa Stuart, the Conservation Department for their ongoing support and Melbourne Water for their ongoing advice and grants, which we couldn’t do without. A special BIG THANKS to Louise for the editing our Newsletter…. WILDLIFE NEWS The work has already begun in our revegetation zone with three of us doing two hours of cutting back and herbiciding the dreaded blackberry, ivy, bone-seed, pittosporum and asparagus fern to allow the growth of the local natives to come through. We had just finished when Sue saw smoke coming from the bush between the bike path and the creek. A fire had really taken hold and was well alight by the time we reached it. It was fuelling along with a gusty wind to keep it alive. We had our mobile, however some Fairhills High School kids came running along to let us know they had phoned the Fire Brigade and they were on the way. Quick thinking kids! Well done. Before long, the expertise of the fire fighters had it all under control and stopped the flames from spreading any further. The bush might just benefit from the burn, and now we’re hoping there will be a regeneration of a few local plants we haven’t seen around for awhile. STRINGYBARK FESTIVAL 22nd & 23rd October 05 For the last two years The FRIENDS of BLIND CREEK BILLABONG and RESERVE have been involved in setting up a display on a stall relating to the activities we have been involved in for the last 5 years around Blind Creek and the Management area. We handed out Flyers and chatted with the public who were interested in Friends groups and many who were keen to do the right thing in planting gardens friendly to the environment. KNOX PRIDE JUDGING November 05 We have entered BLIND CREEK BILLABONG in THE PROUD SUSTAINABILITY award for a few years now. Each year we have received a certificate acknowledging the work we have done .The Community Gardens came first in 2004. The Heany Park Scouts won in 2005 through their hard work in the highly environmentally sensitive Green Wedge where they meet in Heany Park Rowville.
